Much of America had its introduction to Texas state lawmaker James Talarico a few weeks ago with the campaign stunt he pulled on Stephen Colbert's show. Talarico on Tuesday prevailed over Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett in the Democrat Texas primary for U.S. Senator, which raised his profile considerably and put a spotlight on some of his past remarks -- which are raising eyebrows.

Talarico has been portrayed as a rather moderate Democrat who is proudly Christian, which party leaders have calculated will be beneficial come Election Day. But a closer look at what Talarico has said over the years shows he may be even farther left than Crockett.

Here are seven quotes from Talarico that he's made on camera in recent years that shed light on how far left he actually is.

• “Poverty is violence. Pollution is violence. And yes, prison is violence.”

• “As citizens, every one of our neighbors with a uterus became the property of the state.”

• “I want to acknowledge that our trans community needs abortion care, too.”

• “I want us all to be aware that modern science obviously recognizes that there are many more than two biological sexes. In fact, there are six.”

• "God is both masculine and feminine and everything in between. God is non-binary."

• "Jesus Christ himself was a radical feminist."

These aren't just aloof, or off-color comments made extemporaneously. Many, if not all, are taken from situations in which Talarico was delivering prepared remarks, sometimes in his role as a church pastor. And they echo some of the wokest talking points from America's wokest era. Moreover, he's talked about installing a "giant welcome mat" in front of the U.S. southern border.

Democrats haven't held one of Texas' two seats in the U.S. Senate since 1993, but are banking on Talarico to somehow pull off a victory, despite these statements being on the record.

Meanwhile, President Trump has said he would endorse one of the Republicans -- incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton -- still battling for the GOP nomination sometime soon. They are slated for a runoff vote in May after Tuesday's razor-thin results. And Trump's record as an endorser has been extraordinary -- near perfect. Below, watch Dave's take on Talarico has the Democrats' hope to flip a Senate seat in Texas.
