CBS Late Show host Stephen Colbert, facing the end of his tenure at the Tiffany Network in May, is spending the final months of his show allowing himself to be embroiled in a silly, manufactured political controversy -- and is making an even larger fool of himself than he has at any point since the pandemic era.

Colbert on Tuesday claimed CBS lawyers prevented him from airing a segment of his show featuring an interview with James Talarico, a Democrat running for Senate in Texas for the same seat being sought by Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett. Colbert insisted the CBS lawyers refused the interview over concerns that it would draw equal time concerns from the FCC.

Later on Tuesday CBS denied Colbert was barred from running the interview, which the show posted on its YouTube account and was available to viewers there. “The show was provided legal guidance that the broadcast could trigger the FCC equal-time rule for two other candidates, including Rep. Jasmine Crockett, and presented options for how the equal time for other candidates could be fulfilled,” CBS said in a statement

And then Jasmine Crockett entered the fray initially coming out in defense of the FCC. "We did receive information that the federal government did not shut down this segment," Crockett told reporters, weighing in on her chief primary opponent. By Tuesday evening, she completely changed her tone on the issue during an appearance on MS Now. "We've never run into an issue with Colbert," she said, adding, "I have no love for Bari Weiss. I have no love for [FCC Commissioner] Brendan Carr, whatsoever." She went on to applaud the "good strategy" by Colbert to manufacture a controversy and help a Democrat with a fundraising stunt.

Sadly, this episode is a microcosm of what the Late Show has become under Colbert: a PR arm of the Democrat party. A PR arm that alienates half the country, loses about $50 million a year and doesn't do any actual comedy. It's no surprise CBS has canceled the show. In a recent edition of The Rubin Recap, Dave Rubin polled his newsletter subscribers on who the worst leftist clown on television is right now. Colbert, perhaps in a demonstration of his lack of cultural relevance, finished sixth out of ten. His ABC rival Jimmy Kimmel won in a landslide. Not subscribed to The Rubin Recap? Sign up here.
