House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was confronted with questions about the sudden changes to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's net worth on her financial disclosures, and brushed off concerns about the significant changes as attacks "by right wing conspiracy theorists."
Jeffries was questioned by a reporter for Lindell TV in the halls of Congress on Thursday. When asked whether he has considered exploring an ethics investigation into the congresswoman from Minnesota, Jeffries replied, "That issue has not been brought to my attention. But we do know that Ilhan Omar, who works hard on behalf of the people that she represents in Minnesota, is constantly under attack by right-wing conspiracy theorists." The House minority leader seemed to ignore the fact that the reporter had just brought the issue to his attention.
Earlier in the week, newly-filed financial disclosures showed Omar and her husband, the political consultant Tim Mynett, had significantly reduced the range of their total net worth. On a previous disclosure, the couple reported a net worth between $6 million and $30 million. The new disclosure claims their net worth falls between $18,000 and $95,000. The couple blamed the drastic reduction on "accounting errors."
Moreover, reports surfaced that the winery owned by Omar and her husband was abruptly shut down in recent weeks after Republicans began questioning the couple's skyrocketing wealth. According to Newsweek, the California winery was dissolved on April 4. The winery had already been drawing scrutiny for a number of finance-related reasons, and it wasn't clear that the winery bottled any actual wine at all.
None of this is cause for concern, Jeffries suggested. When he was asked about the winery, Jeffries quickly pivoted to doing what Democrats often do best: He began criticizing President Trump. Below, watch Jeffries being questioned in the impromptu interview.
