Controversial U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota is dialing back her net worth in a big way, claiming that "accounting errors" made her and her husband look far wealthier than they actually are.

Last year, Omar filed a financial disclosure report on which she indicated the couple's net worth to be between $6 million and $30 million, a significant jump from the previous year that raised eyebrows throughout Washington, D.C., and around the nation. Under new scrutiny, it was discovered that a winery owned by Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, sells virtually no actual wine

The discovery prompted the House Oversight Committee to investigate the winery and the couple's ties to it, however in early March Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace of South Carolina said the investigation into Omar was being stymied by some Republicans on Capitol Hill. In addition to the House Oversight Committee, the non-partisan Office of Congressional Conduct sent Omar a letter inquiring about the numbers on the financial disclosure form.

Adding to the intrigue,The Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that Omar and Mynett filed an amended financial disclosure form that lists their net worth at somewhere between $18,004 to $95,000, a far cry from what they previously reported. A lawyer for Omar blamed the enormous discrepancies on the couple's accountant.

“As the busiest of people, it is very common for members and their spouses to rely on learned professionals like accountants to make calculations and determinations that appear on public filings,” the lawyer said, according to the Journal. “While the error is of course unfortunate, there is nothing untoward and nothing illegal has occurred.”

Jacklyn Rogers, a spokesperson for the congresswoman, said, “The amended disclosure confirms what we’ve said all along: The congresswoman is not a millionaire."

But many remained skeptical over the weekend that Omar was able to find a convenient explanation for her ballooning net worth just as scrutiny about her and her husband's finances intensified. Concerns have risen that Omar's skyrocketing net worth was a result of her benefitting from the widespread fraud discovered late last year and that was being largely committed by the Somali immigrant community in Minneapolis.

House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer, also of Minnesota, over the weekend called for Omar to be dismissed from Congress. "Not only should her accountant be fired, but that girl should be fired," Emmer said of Omar. "Quite frankly, if she is discovered to be involved in any of this fraud personally -- that she benefited from it -- she should be held accountable to the fullest extent," Emmer said.

Below, watch a clip of Emmer discussing the latest revelations about Omar over the weekend on Fox News.
