Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is pondering taking the plunge into politics in response to the Democrat party becoming overrun by socialists and communists.

Portnoy told Jesse Watters during an appearance on Fox News he's never really wanted to jump into politics because he enjoys his life and he knows what candidates are subjected to in terms of mudslinging and political attacks from opponents.

But Portnoy is so concerned with the direction the Democrat party has taken over the last couple years that he's now considering running for mayor of New York City. "I spend a lot of my day losing my mind right now, especially what's happening in New York," Portnoy said, also citing "the Nazi in Maine," a reference to the senate candidate Graham Platner.

When asked by Watters, Portnoy responded that he "would love to run against" Mamdani. "If I was going to run, it would be here. Can I win here? I have no idea."

Portnoy, however, did draw some distinctions between himself and Mamdani and the other social candidates the mayor recently backed and who won primary races“I've had a real job, I've done real things, unlike these clown politicians who have never had a job and have never been in the real world for a day,” Portnoy said.

Speaking more broadly about the state of the Democrat party in 2026, Portnoy said, “I think what the Democrats have done is they’ve let the fox into the henhouse and now he’s just running rampant and kicking them all out. It’s a scary time. This really really worries me.” Watch a clip of the interview with Portnoy below.
