President Donald Trump on Wednesday reacted to Democrat Graham Platner winning the senate primary in Maine, calling the scandal-ridden candidate a "thug" and throwing his support behind incumbent Senator Susan Collins.
Trump's comments came during a question-and-answer session with reporters in the Oval Office just prior to Trump signing the $70 billion immigration funding bill passed by the House on Tuesday. “He’s worse than any human being that’s ever run for office, probably,” Trump told reporters. “This guy’s got a rap sheet, I’ve never seen anything like it,” he continued. “He’s a low-level thug, and he’s running to be senator."
Platner cruised to victory on Tuesday night, despite being at the center of a litany of scandals an controversies -- most notably a Nazi symbol that's been tattooed on his chest for nearly two decades, and a salacious sexting scandal his wife discovered during their first year of marriage.

Platner made reference to his troubled past in his victory speech, telling supporters, “I’ve made mistakes in my life, mistakes that I regret, that I live with, that I continue to learn from,” according to The Associated Press. The victory speech was carefully stage-managed, with mostly women positioned behind him, an apparent attempt to obscure the accusations women throughout his life have made against him in recent weeks.
Despite all the red flags raised about Platner, Democrats have stood almost uniformly behind him. He's enjoyed the endorsements of the most influential Democrats, including Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tina Smith -- all U.S. senators -- among many others. Meanwhile, those who have tried to expose Platner's lies, launched the website GrahamPlatner.org, which chronicles all of his inconsistencies as well as his history of alleged bad behavior.
Platner will now face longtime incumbent Senator Susan Collins in the November general election, a race that is being closely watched because it could shift the balance of power in the senate to Democrats' favor if Platner were to win.
When a reporter asked the president if Susan Collins has his full endorsement and why, Trump replied that she has his backing. "She's a sane woman. She's not my best friend, at all," Trump said, alluding to their disagreements on issues, like the SAVE Act. "But she's a sane person, and she's a person that never missed a vote -- unfortunately, 'cause sometimes she voted against me."
