Trump remains historically popular among Republican voters, polls show

CNN's Harry Enten explaining Trump's remarkable popularity with Republicans.

"Donald Trump is still the sun of which the planets of the GOP revolve around," CNN polling guru Harry Enten said in a segment on Thursday, in which he discussed President Trump's remarkable popularity within the Republican Party. 

Enten wasn't overstating the case as he backed up the remark by breaking down the numbers showing that Trump's popularity and influence can best be measured by how candidates he endorses have fared in primary elections, as well as the overall high regard in which Republican voters hold Trump.

Enten pointed out that Trump's endorsement of interim U.S. Senator Darline Graham -- who won a runoff vote in the bid to succeed her late brother Lindsey Graham this week -- was a game-changing factor in the race. Without Trump's support, Graham likely would've lost. Enten suggested Trump's endorsement helped push Graham over the top in that race. "It's probably the strongest sign of Donald Trump's name being gold," Enten declared. 

Perhaps even more compelling, though, is polling that surveyed Republican voters about the Republican president they most admire. The numbers are incredible. Trump nabbed 53% of the vote, the polls showed, while legendary Republican presidents Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln amassed just 18% and 8%, respectively. 

Enten said that, usually, when Republican voters are questioned about who the best Republican president is, Reagan has traditionally been the winner. "This is a historic comparison," Enten marveled. Another poll showed that Republican voters view Trump as the greatest president ever.
