Trump pressed Xi on support for Iran during U.S. state visit

President Donald Trump pressed China president Xin Xinping over his continued support for Iran during the Chinese leader's state visit to the White House, according to David Perdue, the U.S. ambassador to China. 

Speaking with Joe Kernen on CNBC Friday, Perdue said Trump made it "very clear" to Xi that any help for Iran was "totally unacceptable." Perdue said both he and the president made it clear to China weeks ago that any assistance to Iran, direct or indirect, was unacceptable to the U.S. 

"We have seen evidence that they have listened to us. We have evidence they pay attention when President Trump speaks about Iran," Perdue added.

The U.S. has been concerned that China has helped Iran with intelligence since the war began seven months ago, and even that it could be supplying weapons to Iran. During a subsequent interview with Bill Hemmer of Fox News, Perdue said they've "seen movement" from China on the issue. "They assured us yesterday that they were not doing that," Perdue told Hemmer. "We know that in the past, we know that there was some intel -- and some potential parts -- that went to [Iran] either directly or indirectly.

When Trump was asked Friday by reporters whether he discussed support for Iran with Xi, he replied, "We did. I think we're going to do great." In a post on Truth Social Friday, the president said he and Xi "will be meeting again in November, in China, and then at the G20 in December, in Miami, Florida."
