Trump predicts Supreme Court will 'probably rule against me' on birthright citizenship

President Trump weighed in on the Supreme Court's upcoming ruling on his executive order banning birthright citizenship during a question-and-answer session with reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday. He predicted that the nation's top court would "probably rule against me because they seem to like doing that."

The president said the section of the 14th Amendment guaranteeing citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil was intended to address citizenship issues in the wake of the Civil War and, in modern times, was being abused by foreigners trying to circumvent the U.S. immigration system.

"Twenty to 25% of the people coming into our country will come in through birthright citizenship. They'll become citizens through birthright citizenship, and it will cost us," Trump said, adding, "birthright citizenship is a disgrace."

At the beginning of his second term, Trump signed an executive order banning birthright citizenship. Lower courts blocked the order, ruling it was unconstitutional, and the Supreme Court heard arguments on the matter in April. According to CBS News, the justices appeared poised to uphold the lower court's ruling.

"You step in our country and all of a sudden you're citizen," Trump continued. "This this was not meant for Chinese billionaires." He cited a case in which he said one person entered the U.S. with 57 children. "If this is allowed to stand, it will be a disaster economically for our country," Trump said. "I hope they do what's right.

Meanwhile, the Homeland Security Department said more than 3 million illegal immigrants have left the country since the beginning of Trump's second term. According to The New York Post, 2.2 million have self-deported and another 900,000 illegals have been deported. And another 900,000 illegals are currently in detention in the U.S. after being arrested by federal agents. A Supreme Court ruling against his birthright citizenship order would be a significant blow to the progress his administration has made on illegal immigration.
