Trump and Mamdani meet at Gracie Mansion in NYC

President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a face-to-face meeting late Monday afternoon at the mayor's residence, their third in-person meeting in less than a year. 

Mamdani invited Trump, who is in New York City this week for the U.N. General Assembly, to meet with him at Gracie Mansion, the mayor's official residence on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. 

The meeting lasted about an hour and the two addressed reporters afterward, with Trump telling the media that Mamdani has a chance to make a big impact on the city. “I’ve seen it with numerous different mayors, and I said some great ones and some not so great ones. So hopefully you’re going to be a great one. I’ll be able to say you’re going to be a great one, and you’re off to a start,” Trump said. 

The two discussed ICE deportations, the cost of living and public safety as well as a major affordable housing project proposed for the borough of Queens that would bring 12,000 new units at Sunnyside Yard. “Sunnyside is a big job,” Trump said, noting that the proposal has been considered for decades. It would also need federal funding.

The meeting came after the two have publicly insulted each other numerous times and after New York City, at Mamdani's direction, sued the Trump administration last week over its new order to enforce the public charge rule, which aims to prevent illegal immigrants from being a strain on public assistance systems.

Trump has made several visits to the historic residence under other New York City mayors, but Monday's visit was his first as president. Below, watch a highlight of Trump and Mamdani addressing the press after Monday's meeting.
