Shocking video was obtained by Fox News showing a licensed commercial truck driver unable to speak or read English when confronted by a Florida transportation official. The official took the driver, and others in similar situations, out of service.
The video came from a ride-along Fox News did with transportation officers, who have been working to rid the roads of drivers who don't speak or read English and pose a threat to other motorists. According to Fox News, about half of the truck drivers Florida troopers confront are unable to meet English proficiency requirements when they're given roadside safety tests.
In one encounter captured on camera, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper asked a truck driver if he could speak any English at all. He managed a one-word answer: "No."
Last August, an illegal immigrant who was behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer caused a deadly crash on a Florida highway attempting an illegal U-turn. The wreck resulted in three fatalities. The driver, Harjinder Singh, failed a written CDL test 10 times in Washington state, according to CBS News, but was granted a license anyway. Eventually, California granted him a CDL also. Singh, 28, was uninjured in the deadly crash, which has prompted a crackdown on illegal immigrants behind the wheels of big rigs, as well as anyone who is unable to comprehend basic road signs. He pleaded not guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide and is awaiting trial.
Below, watch a report from Fox News reporter Alexis Adams on what Florida officials are experiencing out on the open road.
