U.S. senate candidate James Talarico is trying to walk back some of his most extreme statements from recent years as the race between the Texas Democrat and Republican Ken Paxton tightens with under 55 days until the midterm elections.

Talarico sat for an interview with Fox News national correspondent Brooke Taylor on Wednesday and Taylor asked him point-blank about one of his most head-scratching past statements.

"During a 2021 hearing, you said there are 'six biological sexes.' Do you still believe that?' Taylor inquired.

"No," Talarico responded, smiling nervously. "I've missed the mark on some of my past statements. I will be the first to admit it." Talarico then went on to explain his convoluted belief on human biology and genetics. "What I meant is that there are two sexes, and then there's a small percentage of people with genetic abnormalities."

When asked about his remarks that "God is non-binary," Talarico backed away from that comment, too. "I was being provocative with that statement," he said.

Taylor then pressed him on biological men and boys competing in women's and girls' sports, an issue that's been eating up the WNBA in recent months.

"I oppose trans athletes playing in girls sports if it endangers safety or fairness," Talarico said. Talarico invoked his past work as an elementary school teacher, and qualified his opposition for situations in which boys playing in girls sports "risks safety or fairness." Talarico didn't address women's sports.

Recent polling has shown the race between the two is about as close as it can get, with the two locked in a 50-50 tie. And the race for control of both chambers of Congress couldn't be closer less than two months from Election Day.

Below, watch a highlight from the interview showing Talarico trying to distance himself from his 2021 remark about "six biological sexes."
