New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday attempted to unleash a sick burn on President Donald Trump over the legitimacy of his Knicks fandom, but instead revealed her own lack of knowledge about the basketball team, which just punched a ticket to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.
Hochul was in the midst of a press conference when a reporter asked, "What do you say to President Trump saying he's a lifelong Knicks fan?"
The governor replied, “I’d ask him to name the starting lineup from the 1993 championship team and see how he does.” The problem is, although the Knicks were a good team during the 1992-1993 season, they were not the NBA champions. In fact, the '93 Knicks were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals by the eventual NBA Champions, the Chicago Bulls, who, led by Michael Jordan, completed the first of two three-peats in the 1990s that year.
The Knicks last won an NBA title in 1973, making Hochul two decades off the mark, a point that was made resoundingly on social media. In fact, many took to social media to point out that Trump indeed is a bona fide Knicks fan, and has been for a long time.
A clip from The Apprentice in the mid-2000s showed Trump sinking a free throw as then-head coach Isiah Thomas and players Anfernee Hardaway and Jamal Crawford cheered him on.
Another clip surfaced showing Trump sitting courtside and Knicks power forward Charles Oakley falling into his lap at one point during a game. Moments later, Trump was interviewed by late TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager about the encounter, with the future president telling Sager Oakley, "is great, he's a good guy. I know him, so it's OK."
Yessss! Another clip surfaced showing Trump at the 1994 Finals between the Knicks and Houston Rockets showing up at MSG and making a cameo during the pregame broadcast to wish legendary broadcaster Marv Albert a happy birthday.
Trump's eldest child, Donald Trump Jr. chimed in on X, saying, "Anyone who knows my father knows he probably knows more about sports than just about any human being not in the business. Kathy’s failed soundbite ain’t gonna land well… just like her policies."
Earlier this week, Trump said he was planning to attend one of the NBA Finals games at Madison Square Garden in New York City, which would make him the first-ever sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game, according to ESPN -- and was the reason Hochul was asked about whether Trump is a true Knicks fan.
