Man who survived being shot at Trump assassination attempt in Butler dies more than 2 years later at age 76

One of the attendees who was shot in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, during the assassination attempt against Donald Trump died this week at the age of 76, more than two years after he survived the shooting. His family said he'd lived with "life-altering" injuries suffered on that day. 

Jim Copenhaver, who was in the audience at the Trump rally on that fateful day in Butler, died Wednesday “surrounded by his loved ones" his family's lawyer, Joseph Feldman, said in a statement. No cause of death was given and, according to ABC News, Copenhaver's death is being reviewed by the local medical examiner's office. However, Feldman added in his statement that Copenhaver was "gravely wounded" in the assassination attempt.

"Throughout that difficult time, James faced every challenge with the same strength and resolve that defined his life, and the kindness shown by so many brought great comfort to him and to those who love him," Feldman said. He also mentioned Copenhaver's military background and service to the country.

“As a veteran, he proudly served our nation in the armed forces, and his love of country never wavered,” the statement said. “James was a true American patriot who believed deeply in the freedoms and ideals upon which this nation was founded, and he embodied the very best traits of our great nation.”

In a post on Truth Social Thursday evening, President Trump paid tribute to Copenhaver, saying the 76-year-old was "a true American Patriot." Trump also praised Copenhaver's bravery in the chaotic moments right after the shooting, and said, "His indelible legacy of love and devotion will forever endure. Our hearts and prayers are with the Copenhaver family, especially his incredible wife Marianne.

House Republicans on Thursday also acknowledged Copehnaver's death, saying in a statement that he "endured unimaginable hardship with strength and perseverance," and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro also expressed condolences to Copenhaver's family in a statement posted on X.

Copenhaver becomes the second rally-goer shot that day in Butler to have died. Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter, was killed at the rally while shielding his family as gunfire rang out. For more on the story, watch the video below.
