Authorities in Jordan have detained a man in connection with the brutal killing of a U.S. woman in Ireland, after the man allegedly fled Ireland and returned to his native country.
The man who was detained reportedly has been identified as Ahmad Al-Saqar, 28, and is being described as a person of interest in the case. Jamey Carney, a U.S. woman who was found dead in her home in Killarney, Ireland, a popular town with American tourists. Carney, 43, originally from New York, moved there in 2021 with her young daughter, but maintained U.S. citizenship, according to Fox News.
According to officials in Ireland, Carney was found dead in her home by her 13-year-old daughter last Tuesday afternoon. Investigators believe she was killed late the night before after being beaten with part of a toilet, and then suffocated, The New York Post reported.
The New York Post, citing reports from international media, revealed chilling details about Carney's relationship with Al-Saqar. They reportedly met at a pro-Palestine rally about a year-and-a-half ago and recently were married in an Islamic ceremony at a mosque in Ireland. Al-Saqar reportedly arrived in Ireland in 2024 and initially sought citizenship there, but was denied asylum. More recently, according to The New York Post, Carney had been aiding Al-Saqar with obtaining citizenship in the U.S.
Ryan Fox, Carney's cousin, in an interview with RTE News, described the slain 43-year-old as “the sweetest, most caring, most humanitarian, most sensitive” women he's ever known. “We’re all going to do everything in our power to make sure that this doesn’t happen to more people like my cousin Jamey,” he said. Carney's Instagram page is filled with photos herself and Al-Saqar, and the phrase "Free Palestine" is in her bio.
Carney's friends have set up a GoFundMe to raise money for her 13-year-old daughter, Michaela. Al-Saqar was reportedly detained in a tribal area in Jordan. Ireland does not have an extradition treaty with Jordan, Fox News reported. For more on the story, watch the video below.
