Hillary Clinton, still smarting over 2016 election, says 'Electoral College is an abomination'

Former Secretary of State and two-time failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton still harbors animosity over her 2016 election loss to Donald Trump, saying in a new docu-series that the Electoral College is an "abomination."

Clinton famously was the media darling in the 2016 election cycle and most polling showed she would defeat Trump, who mowed through a crowded Republican primary field to clinch the party's nomination, in the presidential election. While Clinton won the popular vote in 2016 with fewer than 3 million more votes than her opponent, Trump carried the Electoral College with 304 votes to Clinton's 227. To win the presidential election, a candidate must receive a minimum of 270 Electoral votes, according to how the Founding Fathers structured Article II of the Constitution nearly 250 years ago.

Trump won key battleground states in 2016 like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, which the Clinton campaign expected to carry, sweeping him into office in a result that surprised many of the Americans who weren't paying attention to the mood of the nation as Barack Obama's second term drew to a close.

As it turns out, Clinton is still smarting about the result. During the early-morning hours following Election Day, Clinton was unable to face her supporters and publicly concede the race, although she reportedly called Trump to congratulate him on his victory. She publicly conceded the race late in the morning on November 9. A decade later, Clinton had some sharp words about the Electoral College, in her appearance in a new Netflix documentary called The American Experiment

“Well, I personally think the Electoral College is an abomination," Clinton says in a trailer for the documentary, which hits Netflix on Wednesday, June 24. "For obvious reasons," she added, before erupting into a Kamala Harris-esque cackle. It's likely she was joking about the institution being an "abomination."

The documentary is a five-part series that is executive produced by Tom Hanks, narrated by Martin Sheen and features interviews with the likes of Kamala Harris, another candidate who lost to Trump, Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi, Ted Cruz, and Trump's first-term vice president, Mike Pence, among others.

The trailer for the docu-series runs about two minutes and consists mostly of people criticizing the Founding Fathers for creating the Electoral College, possibly telegraphing a forthcoming strategy from Democrats which would involve attempting to abolish the Electoral College. Former Republican Senator Jeff Flake is the only voice featured in the trailer who is supportive of the Electoral College. Watch it below.
