Federal agents on Tuesday began detaining rioters who for days have been surrounding an ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, disrupting activities around the facility and clashing with authorities outside the building.
The demonstration entered its fifth day on Tuesday and has mostly been attended by Antifa agitators who constructed barriers around the facility and tried to stop vehicles as they exited and entered the grounds. Over the Memorial Day weekend, several New Jersey politicians, including the governor made appearances at the riot to show solidarity with rioters, and demand they be allowed inside the facility.
The far-left extremists, many suspected of being Antifa members, as well as the politicians claim there is a hunger strike has been going on among detainees held at the Delaney Hall Detention Center who are accused of being illegal immigrants inside the facility and accuse the Department of Homeland Security of allowing the detainees to be held in poor conditions.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on Monday disputed those claims, accusing Gov. Mikie Sherrill, U.S. senators Corey Booker and Andy Kim and many other Democrats of engaging in "a political stunt" in a post on X. The DHS also said on X that "all detainees are provided with three meals a day, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, soap, toiletries, and opportunities to communicate with their family members and lawyers."
Federal law enforcement officials could be seen on video Tuesday hauling at least one of the extremists away in handcuffs and detaining the individual in an ICE vehicle. The extremists clashed with authorities all weekend as they formed a so-called "autonomous zone" from objects taken out of a garbage dumpster as well as slabs of concrete that they dug up out of a nearby sidewalk.
Some of the extremists demonstrating wore masks and were seen on video charging at ICE agents who were trying to restore order outside the facility. Several of the extremists were wearing a keffiyeh, the traditional Palestinian headscarf. Kim, the junior U.S. Senator from New Jersey at one point over the weekend tried to talk the extremists into backing off enough to allow vehicles into and out of the facility. Eventually, he ended up taking pepper spray in his face as as clashes between flared up.
According to a report by Newsmax, the clashes have been on and off on Tuesday afternoon, and a Fox News reporter on the ground there said the rioters have vowed to not leave until the facility is shut down. Watch a report from Newsmax below.
