Democrat nominee for Wisconsin governor vows to fight 'MAGA extremism' if he wins in November

After his narrow and shocking upset in the Wisconsin primary to decide the party's nominee for governor, David Crowley's first address to supporters and the media focused heavily on his desire to fight President Trump and what he described as "MAGA extremism."

Crowley, who eked out a victory over Francesca Hong by fewer than 4,000 votes, had actually dropped out of the race weeks ago, only to get back in as primary day neared, pick up the endorsement of former Gov. Tony Evers, and surprise everyone with a photo-finish win, which some have suggested came under unusual circumstances. 

The 40-year-old Milwaukee County executive accepted the nomination later Wednesday, after the race was called in the overnight hours, and quickly pivoted into slamming President Trump and vowing to do all he can as governor to foil Trump's America First agenda. The chief focus of his speech was to bash Trump rather than to set out an agenda for what he might do in Wisconsin if elected.

"He spends his time fueling culture wars," Crowley said, making no mention of the candidate he barely defeated, who had called for the canceling of Thanksgiving, one the most culturally American holidays celebrated in this nation, and said she was frightened of older white people. 

"Every one of us has something much bigger to unite around, keeping MAGA extremism from bringing the chaos we see in Washington into our neighborhoods. The real opponent has always been Tom Tiffany. He's worked in lockstep with Donald Trump," Crowley said. Crowley also criticized Tiffany over his support of the Iran war.

Meanwhile, Congressman Tom Tiffany, Crowley's Republican competitor in the November election, appeared on Fox News to point out that even though Crowley is being portrayed in the media as a moderate, he's closer to Hong -- a self-avowed socialist -- than many may realize. Tiffany said that two weeks ago, during a debate, Crowley never challenged some of Hong's extreme positions.

"He went on to say, 'My policies will be very similar, not much different, than Francesca Hong,' the socialist," Tiffany recalled in the interview with Harris Faulkner.
