U.S. Representative Brandon Gill of Texas called Sunday for an end to Muslim immigration to the U.S. after a shooting rampage in Austin left two victims dead and another 14 wounded. The gunman, a 53-year-old Muslim immigrant from Senegal, was killed by police at the scene. During the shooting rampage, the gunman wore a sweatshirt that had the words "Property of Allah" on the front of it.
The gunman, identified by Austin police as Ndiaga Diagne, also wore a T-shirt that had the flag of Iran printed on it, according to CBS News, and carried out the attack within hours of the U.S. striking Iran. At least one photo has emerged showing Diagne wearing the "Property of Allah" sweatshirt. Officials are investigating the shooting as a case of terrorism.
"No more Islamic immigration," Congressman Brandon Gill said in a post on X Sunday. "How many Americans have to get Allahu Akbar’ed before we realize Islam is a problem?" Gill asked in a separate post on X. In early February, Gill introduced legislation that would place a 25-year moratorium on the U.S. accepting immigrants from Somalia. Gil said the proposal would codify an executive order issued by Trump and put "the American people first."
In the wake of the deadly shooting in Austin, Gill appears to be widening the scope of any immigration moratorium he's seeking.
"How does immigration from Senegal -- or anywhere in the Islamic world -- benefit Americans? It doesn’t. It brings terrorism and social dysfunction into our own communities, while fundamentally altering America’s cultural fabric," Gill said Sunday. "Islamic terrorism is in America SOLELY because of immigration. It was a policy choice to import it."
Meanwhile, The New York Post on Monday reported that Diagne was the subject of a lawsuit filed in May 2017, in New York City. The lawsuit accused Diagne, who worked for a time as a cab driver, of driving recklessly and running over a pedestrian walking on the sidewalk, a woman named Jennifer Antoine. Antione "sustained severe and permanent personal injuries, became sick, sore, lame and disabled; suffered injuries to her nervous system; suffered mental anguish, was confined to hospital, bed and home," after being struck by Diagne, the lawsuit said.
