Democrats are on the fast-track to becoming an extremist group, according to a large majority of Americans. New polling finds that 58% of Americans believe the Democrats have become "too liberal," an all-time high revealed on CNN by the network's polling guru, Harry Enten.

That figure is up 16 points from 1996, when 42% of Americans said Democrats were "too liberal." Enten pointed to more historical data from the late 1990s to underscore what a head-spinning change the Democrat party has undergone in a relatively short period of time.

"Back in 1999, 26% of Democrats self-identified as conservative. Just 5% said that they were very liberal. It was a smidgen," Enten said. "Now [the] far left has gained considerably in power," he continued. "Now we’re talking about a fifth of Democrats, 21%, say they’re very liberal. That conservative part of the Democratic Party? Adios, amigos. Could be just 8%."

Enten went on to point out that 33% of the party considers themselves "Democratic socialists." For Democrats under the age of 35, 42% have adopted the Democratic socialist label. As attention turns to the 2026 mid-term elections,

Enten warned that this data could be a bellwether for a coming Democrat disaster at the polls later this year.

"The Democrats are moving to the left, the far left is gaining power, and there could be some electoral repercussions, because what we see right now is voters, a clear majority, say: What we see right now is that they are too liberal."
