Two Navy fighter jets performing stunts during an air show in Boise, Idaho, collided in mid-air on Sunday as audiences looked on, and the two pilots in each of the jets all managed to safely eject as their aircraft plunged to the ground.
The harrowing moment unfolded Sunday afternoon at the Gunfighter Skies Air Show and was caught on video by multiple spectators. The dramatic video shows the two fighter jets flying close to one another before suddenly becoming tangled in the sky, began spinning as they were unable to separate, and then falling toward the ground.
As the two Navy EA-18 Growler jets plunged, the pilots could be seen ejecting, their parachutes opening. Within seconds, the planes crashed beneath them in an enormous ball of fire, which sent clouds of black smoke billowing into the sky. The crew members ominously continued floating back toward Earth, their parachutes disappearing into the black smoke.
"All four of the air crew successfully ejected," Commander Amelia Umayam, a spokesperson for the Naval Air Force U.S. Pacific Fleet, said in a statement, according to ABC News. The pilots were reportedly in stable condition following the ordeal, and the air show was ended early. In a statement on Facebook, Navy Colonel David R. Gunter said "everyone involved in today's incident is safe," and he praised the professionalism of the emergency response teams.
